Good Thursday morning AY,
Busy week at AYJ---check out the announcements to see our many athletic teams in the playoffs this week, and students off to Belleville for the Eastern Ontario track finals--followed by OFSSAA we hope!!Tonight's Culture Fest in support of Malika Suraia School in Afghanistan is sold out. Our Winnipeg exchange students flew home last Saturday--a fantastic SEVEC experience for both schools.
If you played on a school team, make sure you get your Athletic Banquet ticket from Jen or Rob.
Community hours--still a number of students who have not completed, or not submitted their hours to guidance. Do it now...don't let procrastination result in not graduating. Ar eminder that all three requirements must be met in order for students to participate in our commencement ceremony at Centrepointe on June 25--all thirty credits, community involvement hours, and the literacy test.
Results from the this years Grade Ten Literacy Test will be out to schools in the next few weeks. Students will be advised if they were successful as soon as possbile after we receive the information.
Today in the Pit , YACC (Youth Against Animal Cruelty) were accepting donations, and selling T shirts that they have made. In addition, they held a bake sale after school yesterday.
I would like to welcome two new administrators to AY Jackson fo the 2010-11 school year--Mr. Mark Harris will be your new Principal, and Ms. Kimberley Lovatt will be a new vice principal. I wish Ms. Campbell all the best at her new school, Woodroffe HS next year.
Monday is the last day to nominate a student and/or a staff member, who exemplies this month's character trait--empathy. Take the time to recognize those who have this very important interpersonal skill.
Sincerely, Mrs. T |

Hello AY
Hope the report cards all made it home safely last week. If some reason, you did not receive one for your child, please contact the main office and we will gladly provide a copy.
We still have some students, hoping to graduate, who have not completed their community hours. If someone you know falls into that category, please remind them that this must be done to graduate. Information on the commencement ceremony, which will be held at Centrepoint Theatre, will be sent home in the near future. This ceremony is the only event which is school sponsored and school supervised related to graduation.
Lots of sports on the go right now....rugby, girls' soccer and touch football, baseball, track and field.
Check out ocdsb.ca where AY's China exchange appears. The Boston Blog is a good read--find out what our 50 students are doing each day. Sunday, our Winnipeg exchange students begin their travel to the west. Also in the news, AYJ's BBB4M students were nominated by Mrs. Belanger for the CAYFO (Child and Youth Friendly Ottawa) Global Citizenship Award for their Mission Darfur event--and they won. Three students from the class will represent AYJ at the Awards night on May 31.
If you didn't get a ticket for Sweeney Todd--you have missed something very special. All three performances are sold out. From the sets, to the make up, the hair, to the cast, the lighting and tech crew, the orchestra, the costumes, the front of the house crew, the assistant director, and stage crew--last night's performance was a resounding success. Tonight, the Cappies Critics will be here. Watch the Citizen tomorrow for their review.

Hello everyone
Congratulations to the junior band who earned Silver at the Kiwanis competition this week...we are awaiting the results for the seniors, who competed yesterday after school. Track and field, girls' touch football and baseball all had meetings today at lunch---great to see so many students interested. Thanks to the coaches for their time and energy in providing these opportunties for AY students.
Report cards will be issued on April 23. Please review your child's progress with him/her by discussing the marks, and the comments that teachers provide. This is a key point in the semester and your support and participation in encouraging students to achieve is invaluable. Check out the course calendars to help you keep up to date.
Sports Marathon is coming soon with more than a hundred students from our feeder schools joining us for the day.
On Monday, Dr. Yelle, will be visiting AYJ to share his experiences in Haiti--see ocdsb.ca for more information. Two more writers will be visiting us in the near future, and students are reading one of their books in advance. See outside today..world issues class in a real life demonstration of what is involved when you need to carry water for a kilometre.
Due to low ticket sales, the dance tomorrow night is cancelled. Refunds will be available to students who did purchase tickets. Grad auction was held in the Pit, this week, with money due to today in order to purchase a grad for tomorrow... and coming soon Oscar Night. |

Hello AY,
If you haven't already, have a look at the most recent edition of the AY Oracle--our new student newspaper. Tickets for Sweeney Todd are on sale in the main office, and are going quickly. Don't miss out. Spring sports are coming soon--check out the info near the gym.
Spring Dance will be April 16--parents able to help supervise for all or part of the evening would be appreciated.
Our travellers will be returning from China and Spain in the near future, and our trips to Boston and Winnipeg are on the horizon.
We will be having an assembly for potential graduating students in the next few weeks to remind them about the importance of keeping their marks up until the end of June, about meeting all graduation requirements, and about making good decisions about year end activities. Our commencement ceremony will be held on June 25 at Centrepoint Theatre---information regarding gowns, tickets and format will be coming in May. A reminder that students must meet all graduation requirements in order to participate in our commencement (30 required credits, OSSLT or equivalent, and 40 Community Involvement Hours.)
Happy Easter, enjoy the wonderful weather that seems to be in store for us.
