Sweeney Todd Nominated for 11 Cappie Awards |
|
In a ceremony at the Ottawa Citizen this afternoon, A.Y. Jackson's musical Sweeney Todd was nominated in 11 Cappies Awards categories. Winners will be announced at the Cappies Gala on June 13, 2010.
Sweeney Todd was nominated in the following catergories:
1. Sound: Katie LeBrun, Kate Moussatova & Jaime Vives
2. Lighting: Sean Behncke, Katie LeBrun & Jaime Vives

Practice Lock Down (April 27th) |

Hello
Today, approximately five minutes into our lunch time, AYJ held their second lockdown drill. In co-operation with the Ottawa Police, we completed the exercise in approximately thirty minutes. Being prepared in the event of an emergency situation is very important for students and staff. If you or your child has any questions about what to do in a lockdown, they should ask any of their teachers, or a member of the admin team. Afternoon classes resumed at 12:55. |

Students who will be writing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test attended an assembly on March 31 to learn about what will happen on the test day, April 8. During their afternoon classes on Tuesday and Wednesday (April 6 and 7), students will have an opportunity to work on test booklets, which are similar in format to the actual test. These resources , and more, are also available at eqao.com
Two lists have been posted on the first floor where students can find out which classroom they will be writing the test in. |

A Request for Cardboard Boxes |

As many of you will be aware, AY has been collecting non-perishable food, clothing and other basic items to be sent to the people of Haiti. We now desparately need more cardboard boxes to package and ship the collected items. If you have any spare cardboard boxes that you would like to donate, please drop them off at the school office ASAP. |

Some important information regarding AYJ examinations.
Please ensure that you check the schedule (hard copies in office, and posted on this site)carefully and are on time for your exam. If for some reason you are late, report to the main office. You will be escorted to your exam room. No extra time will be provided due to lateness.
If you miss an examination, you will receive a zero. The exception would be if you havea medical note from your physician indicating that you were away for medical reasons,
A reminder that no electronics of any kind, no hats, no bags can be brought into the exam rooms.
Return your textbooks to your subject teacher, in your regular classroom, between 8:30-8:45 of the exam day. Please check if you are taking science, as you may need to return those books to the cafeteria, where science exams are being written. Semester Two students need these books...don't let them down.
Students will not be permitted to leave the exam room until one hour has passed. After that, students will be excused every fifteen minutes.
The library is open until noon for quiet study throughout the week.
Students are to leave the buildiing once their examination is written,out of respect for those still writing throughout the building and for teachers who will be marking and preparing for semester two start up in the afternoon and are not available to supervise halls etc. No examinations are scheduled in the afternoon.
The cafeteria is not open during the examination period. A reminder to eat a healthy breakfast, after getting a good night's sleep, to be able to do your best on your exams.
Semester Two starts on Monday February1 and is a regular day.

To all Grade Eight Students, Parents, Families and Friends
AYJ Grade Eight Parent Evening will be held on Tuesday January 19 at 7 p.m. The evening will begin in the cafetorium with a brief presentation and then our guests will be able to visit classrooms, Student Services, the library, meet teachers and Department Heads, learn about our J Crew program, learn about grade nine courses, clubs, teams and activities and ask all of your questions. We look forward to meeting the Class of 2014.
Our AYJ guidance counsellors will be visiting our feeder schools during the last week of January.

Press Release: Mission Possible - Darfur |
|
December 17, 2009, Ottawa – More than 300,000 people have died in Darfur, and 3 million more have been displaced, leaving what the United Nations considers “the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today.” A.Y. Jackson Secondary School Business teacher Cathy Belanger, says her Grade 12 International Business students hope to raise awareness and resources for displaced Darfuri children and their families. The students have planned a showcase event they have entitled Mission Possible: Darfur. All proceeds will be going to field projects in Darfur via the UN Refugee agency (UNHCR).

Jays are 2009 Hockey Champions |

On Tuesday afternoon at Manotick Arena, the AY Boys Hockey Team won the NCSSAA Non-Contact Hockey Championship when they defeated St. Mark 3-2 to win the best two out of three games series 2-0. Beyond Our Walls Conference |
|
On November 25, AY Jackson students and teachers hosted our 4th Annual "Beyond Our Walls" Conference, a youth conference attended by 250 students from 14 schools in the Ottawa area. The focus of this year's conference was "Youth for Youth" (note "Y4Y" on the T-shirts) on ways youth can help other youth locally, nationally and internationally. The photo (below) shows some of the students and staff who were involved.

Graduation photos will be in the Library Seminar Room from November 25 - December 2. Information packages will be distributed in class on Friday, November 20. Photo sessions must be booked with Mrs. Griffioen in the office. Due to the volume of students requiring graduation portraits, it is extremely important to keep your appointment. Students who do not show up at their appointed time without notifying the photographers in advance will be charged an additional $5.00 for a sitting when you sign up for a second time. Students are asked to know which level of package desired before booking a session. Sitting fee payment of cash or cheque (made out to Lifetouch) is given to the photographer at the photo session.
Grad photos are not mandatory. If a yearbook & composite only pose is required, there is no need for an appointment. Please see the photographer in the Library Seminar Room. |

Arts Advisory Committee Awards |
|
On the evening of Oct. 20, 2009, AYJ Drama teacher Illona Henkelman and the cast of 'A Few Good Men' were honored with awards at the Arts Advisory Committee Awards Ceremony. Mrs. Henkelman won the Secondary School Drama Teacher of the Year (2008-2009) award and the AYJ play 'A Few Good Men' won an award for ' Outstanding Event of the Year'. Pictured below are Mrs. Henlemen and some of the cast of 'A Few Good Men'.

Come on out Wednesday, October 21st, to Photo Retake Day......
a) If you bought a package and would like another sitting (maybe you were having a bad day!), you must give back to the photographer the first package of pictures taken.
- b) If you weren't at school in September when the photographers were here and you want to buy a package, then you must pay with either cash or a cheque on October 21st.
- c) If you didn't get a student card the first time the photographers were here in September, then there is no charge.
- d) If you got a student card in September, but have since lost the card, a replacement card is $5.
- e) If you got a student card but there was a spelling mistake or there was no bar code, it's free to have your card replaced and errors corrected.

Parents should be aware that the OCDSB does not provide accident insurance coverage in the event of student injuries that occur on school premises or during school activities. Unfortunately, despite all reasonable precautions being taken, accidents can and do continue to happen.
